SPU seeks new levels of academic excellence in the sciences as one means of impacting society. The science initiative will distinguish SPU further in undergraduate training and research. To maximize its resources and capitalize on its strengths in the sciences, SPU will:

• Educate students to become scientifically literate citizens;
• Educate students for careers in the advancement of science; and
• Educate students to become influential science teachers at the elementary and secondary levels.

The Need for a Facility
The effective teaching of contemporary science demands far more student involvement in the processes and investigation of science. A new building with modern equipment and creatively-designed laboratory, classroom and support space, will provide the tools with which science faculty members can maximize their interaction and effectiveness with students.

Leading the Way in Undergraduate Research
Involvement in research is the single most important element in the future of undergraduate education nationwide. SPU's undergraduate work in the sciences will rise to the next level in the new facility, acting as a catalyst of discovery for the entire science program. SPU students will have the competitive edge that today's scientific marketplace demands.
