Perhaps
no part of the Comprehensive Plan has more potential
to dramatically change Seattle Pacific’s academic influence
and transform the world of Christian scholarship than the
creation of the Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development.
The mission of the Center is to encourage the best contemporary
Christian thinkers to engage the culture and change the world
in light of the Christian gospel. By promoting cutting edge
scholarship, teaching and mentoring, the Center will not not
only serve the campus community, but will also engage the
wider arena of public opinion as well.
Guides and Mentors
The
Center will oversee a variety of activities. First, it will
recruit, fund and host outstanding Christian scholars. Some
of these nationally recognized senior scholars would hold
permanent endowed chairs at the University, using the Center
as a platform to share their deep and rich experience across
academic disciplines. They will also serve as guides and mentors
to students and faculty colleagues, as well as contribute
a biblically informed voice to the public sphere through their
writing and speaking.
Institutes for Christian Scholarship
Other activities coordinated through the Center include hosting
summer institutes and annual lectures by visiting scholars;
providing support for faculty research and scholarship; assisting
faculty in academic grant writing and participation in national
faculty development programs; undertaking initiatives to share
the results of faculty and student scholarship with the church,
the community and the culture; and promoting a campus climate
in which researching, writing, creating, teaching and learning
are understood and valued as Christian vocations.
