The Endowment Initiative ($29.4 Million).
Despite market downturn in the early years of The Campaign, the Seattle Pacific University endowment rebounded with impressive growth. The endowment has risen to $28.5 million because of $9.7 million in current gifts to The Campaign’s Endowment Initiative. The endowment also received deferred gifts of $9 million, primarily in the form of trusts and annuities, and pledges of $10.7 million through wills and other planned gifts. Current and deferred gifts combined exceeded the initiative goal by $8.4 million.
The Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development
Initiative ($7.1 Million).
The campaign's Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development Initiative yielded a total of $7.1 million, including gifts to support a variety of educational programs at Seattle Pacific University. Among those programs are the Washington School Research Center, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and SPU’s new Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development, funded by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.
The
Science Initiative ($2.2 Million).
“As Christians, we must be scientifically literate to have any hope of making a difference in the world,” said President Philip Eaton as Seattle Pacific University opened its new Science Building in 2003. With donor gifts and money raised through a bond issue, SPU has invested $34 million in the sciences during the life of The Campaign. The results are a 63,000-square-foot Science Building for the study of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and psychology; a remodeled Otto Miller Hall for the study of computer science, engineering,
mathematics, and physics; a science faculty with exceptional credentials, experience, and connections within the scientific community; and the largest-ever enrollment in the sciences at SPU.
The University Fund Intiative ($8.7 Million).
One of the most critical sources of financial support for students, The University
Fund provides unrestricted dollars for scholarships in a day when almost two-thirds of all Seattle Pacific University students receive some form of financial aid. During a campaign,
however, there is a risk that those who normally give to the annual fund will divert their gifts to other campaign projects. So it was a very positive sign when donors chose to invest generously in scholarships during The Campaign. In fact, the University Fund
Initiative saw the largest increase in giving by new donors and exceeded its goal by nearly 11 percent, for a final total of $8.7 million.
The Restricted Annual Initiative ($7.6 Million).
Gifts came in all shapes and sizes and benefited everything from student scholarships to capital projects and other programs. During the life of The Campaign, donors gave $7.6 million to meet specific needs identified by Seattle Pacific University as critical to fulfilling its vision.
